The average U.S. worker today earns roughly $46,641 a year, according to data from the Social Security Administration. The median salary in the country, however, is only $30,533, which tells us that a greater number of people earn less than the average than more.

That’s sad. But the average employer now wants degrees, certifications, experience, and a willingness to work weekends and holidays

73 years old and never made more than $45,000.00 per year. Put three kids through college without borrowing a dime. All three are successful professionals making more than I ever made. Wife and I traveled the world the last two years including a transatlantic cruise. We paid cash for a 2016 motor home when we got back from Europe earlier this year. If you set your priorities right you can do what you want. Don’t try and live above your means

Thomas

If you think you could do the same today, you are delusional. At 73, that means you were born in 1945 and entered the workforce in about 1965....and retired in about 2005. You really could not have timed it any better.

Sorry but American middle class or the standards of living for the middle class is not the same today as it was when you were in the work force

Life is much harder today than it was 50 years a ago from a financial stand point. A man could work a normal job and support a family of 4 or 5 with no college degree. Life was much slower, I wish I would have been born in the 30's. Now both parents have to work and still scrape by and life is so fast and stressful. My wife and I make over a 100k combined and we are living just OK

Soledad

I only make 20k in GA as a teachers assistant, work 45 hours a week, no lunch break, and my paycheck after insurance and taxes every two weeks is $420.00. Two college degrees and five years in education experience

Jay

You dont have no 2 college degrees making that measly amount. Your parents should disown you.

Dan

You must be an illegal or here on a work visa

No matter what anyone tries to make you believe, wages have been stagnant for years.

Half of employed workers are at the poverty level and deep in debt. Are they supposed to live on the street so they can save money? Rents take up over half of their income these days. Food isn't cheap.

naspa

My employer never paid a raise in 12 years. Never paid healthcare or 401k. Never paid vacation time. The unemployment can be o%, if the wage and benefits are zero, there is no future for the working class.

freeman

Why the heck did you stay working there?

Lisa

When my employer didn’t give me what I wanted I went out and found an employer who would. Try ambition. It’s hard, but you have to want it.

earlk

so why did you work there?no education or ambition I assume

Nodor

My salary is above average, but every check 41.7% is taken out for taxes, healthcare, pension, 457 and union dues

Joel

If it wasn't for UNIONS, you would be making $2.50 hr. The dues are worth it

Donna

Dump the union, it is not doing anything for you

Mitchell P

I live on Long Island and $46,000 per year here before taxes is poverty-level wages

JJ Jingleheimerschmidt

My wife and I each make almost $90k with just a 2 year degree (nursing and software development). We didn’t start with that salary of course but my point is it’s not that difficult to learn a skill that can earn you a decent living.

Philip

My "Salary" is only about $23,000 a year. But I might add that I don't work since I'm retired and that is my Social Security and my wife gets close to the same! We do quite nicely, thank you very much!
